NOBEL WINNER RETURNS

Nobel Peace Prize winner Shirin Ebadi returned to her homeland, greeted by throngs of supporters who hail the Muslim rights activist as the new guiding force of Iran’s reform movement.

Supporters – including reformist parliament members who are often at odds with the country’s powerful hard-line clerics – poured into the airport VIP lounge to welcome the lawyer, who was attending a Paris conference when the prize was announced. Many supporters wore white to symbolise peaceful change.

Outside, more than 5,000 people gathered in the biggest pro-reform rally since violent street demonstrations in June. Many women wore white head scarves in support of Ebadi’s calls for peaceful reforms and greater attention to human rights. Men wore white shirts and carried white flowers.
